Five Question Friday: James Dietsch

5 Question Friday: James Dietsch

Five Question Friday with James Dietsch. Dietsch is president of the Central Oklahoma 89er Chapter of QF.

QF: You're a veteran (30+ years) of Oklahoma quail hunting. What's your fondest memory?

JD: My fondest memories are hunting with my Dad and his dogs when I was a kid. Quail were plentiful back then and dogs were not necessary, but my Dad introduced hunting with dogs to me when I was 11. I have owned a bird dog ever since then.

QF: In roughly one and a half years, what has Quail Forever been able to accomplish in your area?

JD: Our local chapter, the Central Oklahoma 89er Chapter (www.centralokquailforever.org) was formed once Pheasants Forever announced Quail Forever's development. In that short amount of time, we have held several fundraisers that have allowed our chapter to accomplish the following:
- An $8,000 project on a public hunting area in western Oklahoma known as Packsaddle that is visited by many resident and non-resident quail hunters every season. The habitat improvement project includes removal of Old World Bluestem and replacing it with native grasses. It also includes fence removal that will allow easier hunter access and more even cattle distribution.
- Donated $1,000 to the Game Bird Research Fund at Oklahoma State University
- Held a youth shoot with 25 young shooters that turned into an annual event. Most of those shooters have never fired a gun before. The next youth shoot is scheduled for May 12th, in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
- Donated $250 to the Red River Quail Symposium
- Earmarked funds for the South Eastern Quail Study Group to be held in Oklahoma August 6-9, 2007.

QF: Aside from quail hunting, how else do you enjoy the great outdoors?

JD: I love the outdoors. Fishing, turkey hunting, dog training, skiing and college football (I hope they never play college football in a stadium with a dome!).

QF: You've written on the subject of quail and the outdoors over the years. As a writer, who do you look up to?

JD: I look up to upland writers like Ben Williams, Gene Hill, and Steve Smith (though he does not need to know it); they are some of my favorites. I also enjoy anything Aldo Leopold and Ted Nugent is always a good read.

QF: Baseball's opening day is less than a week away. Who's your early pick to win the World Series this season?

JD: I would like to see the Detroit Tigers in the series again, but I would pick the St. Louis Cardinals to repeat.
