Five Question Friday: Rick Hamrick

Five Question Friday: Rick Hamrick

Five Question Friday with Rick Hamrick. A research biologist at Mississippi State University, Hamrick is president of the Golden Triangle Chapter of QF.

QF: You're a research biologist. Are there biologists who don't research?

RH: Although all biologists may not be directly involved in research, all biologists are in some way involved in research. Most biologists collect some types of data (such as harvest information, wildlife counts, etc.). If they are using this data to make management decisions, they are doing research. Also, all biologists must be able to apply information learned through research in the field, even if they were not involved in the actual study. For example, habitat or population studies published in scientific literature or agency reports typically provide information that can be used to more effectively manage a given wildlife species. So, I would say just about all biologists are involved in research, because much of wildlife research is tied to management.

QF: Do you think State would ever consider changing the nickname from Bulldogs to Quail?

RH: That will probably not happen in my lifetime. Although what is now Mississippi State University has been represented by several mascots over the years, they have been the Bulldogs for some time now. I think the Bulldog mascot will persist at State.

QF: How intense is State's rivalry with Ole Miss?

RH: This may not be very well known outside of Mississippi or the Southeast, but anyone who has lived here for very long and followed athletic teams from either university will tell you it is INTENSE! The football rivalry is over 100 years old. Although heated during actual sporting events, many fans keep it relatively good-natured (though pointed) outside of sports events.

QF: Mississippi State will win its next SEC football title in...?

RH: Since we are still looking for the first one (although we do have one division title), I am going to be modest and just leave it at "a few more years".

QF: Mississippi's best kept secret is...?

RH: There are many friendly people here that treat each other and visitors with courtesy and hospitality. We also have lots of nice weather and many opportunities to enjoy hunting and other outdoor activities.
