Five Question Friday: Jim Wooley

Five Question Friday: Jim Wooley

Five Question Friday with Jim Wooley, QF Director of Field Operations.

QF: When you think of your father, you think of...?

JW: All the important things he passed to me...he was passionate about the outdoors, wildlife, hunting and shooting. I was lucky enough to pick up those things from him. I think mostly of being with him on grouse hunts and his helping me track the first deer I shot in Northern Michigan. And, I catch myself saying the same things to my kids that he said to me...so I guess it's true - you do become your parent.

QF: The best father/son sports tandem of all-time was...?

JW: My son Chris and I in Little League ball...he was pretty good, and I wasn't, but I helped coach his teams anyway. Probably did an awful job, and would still love to do it over again.

A great baseball sports tandem..........Jim and Queenie O'Rourke!! Dad Jim signed with the Boston Red Stockings him in 1873, and was one of the first Irish Catholic ballplayers. He played 31 years, from 1873 to 1904 with the Stockings, Red Caps, Buffalo Bisons, Providence Grays, and New York Giants and was paid a whole $2,000 in 1881 - probably pretty big smoke then. O'Rourke's contract with the New York Giants stipulated the team pay for him to attend Yale Law School and he became a lawyer in the offseason. Gotta love a lawyer that drops his practice to play ball. In 1876, O'Rourke played in the first National League game and was credited with the first hit (a single) in National League history. His son Queenie only played 1 season with the New York Highlanders, in 4 different positions, and was a .231 hitter. He also went to Yale and Holy Cross and may have decided that full time law practice made alot more sense than baseball. Or maybe he just didn't like his nickname.

Yeah, I just keep all this stuff hanging around in the back of my head...............uh huh.

QF: Your favorite TV dad...?

JW: Hands down, Ward Cleaver has always been my role model. I battle the Eddie Haskell in me every day. Mostly, I lose.

QF: The perfect Father's Day activity is ?

JW: Bass or bluegill fishing with the family.

QF: One thing no father should live without is...?

JW: An appreciation of his own youthful history when dealing with his kids. I got off way too easy.
