Five Question Friday: Grant Cannatella

Five Question Friday: Grant Cannatella

Five Question Friday with Grant Cannatella, president of the Atchafalaya Region Chapter in Melville, Louisiana.

QF: What's different about quail hunting in Louisiana as opposed to elsewhere in the U.S.?

GC: Here in south Louisiana, we don't have the piney forests that are prominent throughout the southeast. When we had quail, we would hunt grassy edges of cropland, overgrown drainage ditches, brushy fence rows and bayou edges. Now with clean farming practices, the crop areas are clean, the ditches nicely manicured and the old fence rows are gone. Our last hope is the conservation programs to build habitat and landowner awareness and education. We hold on to that hope because at the end of a good quail hunt, we plan the next big supper of Quail Sauce Piquante.

QF: Your favorite LSU football memory?

GC: Any Saturday night in Tiger Stadium! It just doesn't get any better. A victory over Alabama and Nick Saban this fall will rank up there at the top! (Sorry QF Alabama chapters, this is personal.)

QF: We couldn't pay you to eat...?

GC: Down here in Cajun Country, we eat pretty much anything. If it doesn't taste right the first time, we just add more seasonings and spices!

QF: What's your weirdest talent?

GC: I can't say that I have one. I'm a pretty good cook and my wife says I can open the refrigerator, grab 6 or 8 open jars and containers, and end up with a gourmet meal.

QF: If you wrote a blues song, you'd title it...?

GC: "There ain't no quail no more." (For now, but we WILL do something about it!)
