Iowa Youth Hunting's Lightning Rod

A Great Start on Forever: November 2008 This October 18th, Rod Sheldon, a leader with the Dickinson County Chapter of Pheasants Forever in Iowa, did what he does each and every autumn.

That day, around 100 youngsters descended upon his place for pheasant hunting, trap shooting, and plenty of food and prizes.

"When others talk about getting youth involved, Rod does it," said John Doely of Sheldon, Iowa, who also helps mentor at the event, "He is truly interested in the future of hunting and really promotes youth hunting."

A Great Start on Forever: November 2008 "It's people like Rod and the rest of the Dickinson County chapter who are strengthening Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever's No Child Left Indoors® initiative," said John Linquist, Pheasants Forever/Quail Forever Regional Representative in Western Iowa. The new No Child Left Indoors® initiative is part of a national movement aimed at getting youth unplugged from electronics and turned on to the outdoors, nature and wildlife. The No Child Left Indoors® initiative is carried out through youth habitat projects, youth and family community events - such as the Dickinson County chapter's youth mentor hunt - and youth outdoor education programs hosted by PF/QF chapters and volunteers across the country.

"I am sure Rod will not want any attention," Doely said, "But a youth hunt simply could not possibly be better anywhere in the country. Handing youths their first pheasants - it doesn't get much better than that." A Great Start on Forever: November 2008
