The best part about any hunt is the experience, and any harvested game is a true trophy. That said, hunters have always loved to compare their quarry in many ways – think weight, antler points, etc. – to have some fun and start a few arguments. Big game hunters have their Boone and Crockets and Pope and Youngs, but now bird hunters have a scoring system catered just for them.
Pheasants Forever's Rooster Record Book is the new standard for scoring big birds, and contains the best method to measure and score your longtails and longspurs. Even better, the upland hunter who officially registers the largest rooster in the Rooster Record Book between now and January 31, 2010, will receive an embroidered Pheasants Forever game vest specially customized with name, year and official Rooster Record Book score.
Here's How it Works.
- Make sure you're a Pheasants Forever member. The Rooster Record Book is only open to current members. Not a member? Join Pheasants Forever Today
- Go pheasant hunting. Skip work or school if need be.
- Make your shots count.
- To score your rooster in the Rooster Record Book:
- Measure the length from the rear of the cloaca (rear vent) to the tip of the tail (to the nearest 1/4") and multiply by 5.
- Measure the length from the front of the leg to the back of the spur on each leg (to the nearest 1/8") and multiply the sum of these measurements by 25.
- Add the totals together. Long-tailed mature birds will score 140+
