Operation: Save the Quail

Quail Country: April 2010

Sixty six youngsters in Mrs. Julie Schnedler's sixth grade class at Mediapolis (Iowa) Community School won the national grand prize, an all-expenses-paid trip to Disneyland, for Disney's Planet Challenge submission titled, "Operation: Save the Quail." Des Moines County, Iowa's Aldo Leopold Chapter of Pheasants Forever funded the class project with an $8,000 contribution.

Sixth grade teacher Julie Schnedler recently dedicated an entire term to a student-led quail habitat project on another county property near the school. In this project, Schnedler's 64 students studied quail - with the assistance of guest speakers - then developed a quail management plan for the property which consisted of reconstructing an 18-acre degraded prairie, and another six acre area that had been overtaken by woody invasion. Their recommendations were based on their research and an on-site assessment of current habitat conditions. A second field trip had the students put the plan to action by planting shrub thickets, known as "covey headquarters." They also hand-planted prairie seed and, with the assistance of conservation department staff, removed trees that would serve as predator perches.

In recognition of the achievement focusing on the habitat needs of quail, Quail Forever has supplied the youngsters with QF t-shirts and hats. The organization also plans to feature the class project in the Quail Forever Journal of Quail Conservation, the Pheasants Forever Journal of Upland Conservation, Upland Tales and On The Wing publications.
