While South Dakota remains the undisputed “Pheasant Capital,” the state’s Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acreage has declined by one-third in the last decade, and native prairie losses have exceeded even CRP expirations. Quail Forever and Pheasants Forever views strategic, public land acquisitions as a way to improve pheasant habitat and provide access to the state’s thousands of pheasant hunters, as well as the bobwhite quail population in the southern portion of the state.
Accomplishments
Quail Forever and Pheasants Forever's Build a Wildlife Area program in South Dakota is currently raising funds to conduct its first land acquisition project in the state. Once acquired, the land will be dedicated as a new wildlife area that will be open to public hunting and outdoor recreation.
