Quail 8 Conference: Supporting the Bobwhite Rebound

More than 20 Quail Forever staffers are attending the eighth National Quail Symposium and Joint Quail Conference presented by the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative set to take place July 25th – 28th in Knoxville, TN. The event is expected to draw 300 quail experts, researchers, policy-makers, and natural resource managers from state, federal, and institutional organizations from around the U.S., Canada, Latin America, and Europe to discuss quail priorities for the future.

Commonly referred to as Quail 8, the workshop held every five years is the world’s largest gathering of quail experts and enthusiasts. This year’s convention will be the first held in conjunction with the National Bobwhite Technical Committee (NBTC), the leading group of quail experts in the U.S. and the primary authors of the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative (NBCI), stationed at the University of Tennessee.

Featured at the conference will be the latest research findings, plenary lectures, contributed presentations, and peer-reviewed proceedings all focused on restoring bobwhite quail populations to their former glory. On-the-ground results of bobwhite response to management techniques will also be presented.

During the events on July 26th, Quail Forever will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Tall Timbers Research Station & Land Conservancy; a non-profit focused on restoration of fire dependent habitats to support high density populations of wild bobwhites and associated wildlife species. The memorandum serves as a representation of Quail Forever and its partners shared commitment to aid in rebounding quail populations throughout the Southeast.

Quail Forever’s South Carolina Quail Focus Area Coordinator, Jordan Nanney, will be presenting research at the conference on his work within the Indian Creek Woodland and Savanna Restoration Initiative area. In addition to Quail Forever, NBCI & NBTC, the conference is also sponsored by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation, Western Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies, and the University of Tennessee.
