Weather and Conditions

"South Florida and the panhandle region received significant rainfall events throughout the summer which most likely impacted the early nesting season and chick survival," says Greg Hagan, northern bobwhite coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "However, the central part of the state received adequate rainfall, creating favorable nesting conditions and chick survival."

Hatch and Broods

"While Florida does not conduct summer surveys, we have received several positive reports from the field," says Hagan. "And although nesting and chick survival was suppressed in several areas, adult survival has been high. This combined with quality habitat and cover conditions should result in a good late hatch."

Habitat and Programs

"Overall, habitat conditions across the state are in excellent condition," says Hagan. "Florida continues to provide numerous hunting opportunities on public land throughout the state where bobwhites are featured and favorable land management efforts such as frequent prescribed fire, timber harvests, and roller chopping have been increased."

Top Spots

"Historically, the panhandle and central regions have produced the best hunting opportunities," says Hagan. "However, properties across the entire state implementing sound habitat management should have good bird numbers this year."

Insider Tips

"This year's hunting season runs November 10, 2018 to March 3, 2019," Hagan says. "Be sure to note that if hunting public land, please consult the area-specific regulations as the season may differ from the statewide season."
